Take a Walk on the Wild Side with Music for Dogs

Lou Reed and his wife Laurie Anderson are planning a concert for dogs this month in Australia — one that will be fully audible only to canine ears.

Music for Dogs, a “high-frequency concert” for canines, will be held outside the Sydney Opera House during the Vivid Live festival. It’s being billed as “an inter-species social gathering on a scale never seen before in Australia,” the BBC reports.

On June 5, the Sydney Opera House will host the debut of Anderson’s 20-minute piece composed of high-frequency noises that dogs can hear but that are inaudible to human ears, Agence France-Presse reported. (For the owners of the recital’s intended listeners, there will also be spoken word and and string music elements.)

The couple said they have experience making music for at least one dog- – their rat terrier, Lollabelle. “She likes things with a lot of smoothness but with beats in them,” Anderson said.

Anderson said the inspiration for the performance came while she was backstage at an event and thought “wouldn’t it be great, if you were playing a concert and you look out and you see all dogs?”

The show will last for 20 minutes. Anderson says “dogs don’t have a giant concentration span.”

WA2S.org Eyes on the Gulf Campaign Needs Your Help

WA2S.org Executive Director, Tom McPhee, traveled to Louisiana earlier in the month and captured human-animal interactions now occurring after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. McPhee will return to the Gulf in the coming days.

Military Working Dog Teams National Monument

You can remember all of the military working dogs this Memorial Day by donating to help them raise the estimated $850,000.00 needed to build and maintain this long overdue monument to the heroic military servicemen and servicewomen (dog handlers) and their incredible military working dogs. Your donations are tax deductible.

Memorial Day 2012 is the designated date for the Military Working Dog Teams National Monument opening.

The National War Dog Monument will be an open-air memorial 5,000 square feet in size, constructed of granite and stone. The monument, located in Fort Belvoir, VA. within the 90 acre public set aside for the construction of the U.S. Army National Museum, will be surrounded by vegetation, bushes and trees, and it will include a small wall describing the role dogs have performed in our nation’s security. The centerpiece of the memorial is a 10-foot, D-shaped pedestal with five figures manufactured out of silicon bronze: a dog handler in modern-day combat gear surrounded by four dog breeds: Doberman, German shepherd, Labrador and the Belgian Malinois. The public site will accommodate public transportation, parking, and you can take your dog with you.

Rescue Riviera / Sauvetage Riviera Helps Dogs in America and France

The Companion Animal Protection Society has joined the Santa Cruz SPCA and the Societé Défense des Animaux to mobilize a rescue program, Rescue Riviera / Sauvetage Riviera , that will take adoptable dogs out of certain death in over-crowded California shelters and airlift them to France, where they will be placed in adoptive homes.

According to French animal welfare associations, there is a dearth of small, adoptable dogs that are suited to city dwellers in France. Because of the lack of adoptable small dogs in French shelters, dog lovers are buying animals in pet shops, furthering the suffering of animals bred in puppy mills.

In the United States, there is such a surplus of small adoptable dogs, 25% of them purebred, that shelters are killing them for lack of space and in France, there are not enough small adoptable dogs and there are people who would gladly adopt them. But Riviera Rescue/ Sauvetage Riviera needs your help to make this happen.

Riviera Rescue/ Sauvetage Riviera is a program that pulls a manageable number of small adoptable dogs at a time. The dogs are sterilized, micro-chipped and vaccinated, quarantined for 21 days, treated (if needed) for respiratory infection or parasites and then flown from death row to freedom in France. They are planning the first Riviera Rescue this summer, with French and American media covering the story. A film crew will be documenting the rescue from the worst Los Angeles shelters of seven lucky dogs who will survive. Once the first seven have been rescued, they will be ready for the next airlift.

Missy the Lab is this School’s Best Friend

Three years ago Charles Hay Elementary School in Englewood, Colo., adopted Missy, a Black Lab, from a local animal shelter. The students wanted a school dog and the staff found that the impact of a canine for teaching kids was very beneficial. At 8 weeks old, Missy became the school mascot.

Then the staff realized that Missy needed surgery on both her knees and her hind legs, at a cost of $8,000. School officials say budget cuts made using school money out of the question.

However, they found a local organization willing to help out, The Colorado Helping Hands Foundation along with the Alameda East Veterinary Hospital both chipped in to make Missy’s surgery possible.

And now Missy is healthy and back at school fulfilling her school mascot duties.

Garage Sale to Benefit Dog Shelter

This weekend is the Misha May Mutt Rescue Garage Sale to benefit the Baby Bear Medical Fund for sick and injured dogs. The sale itself takes place May 21-22 – Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m.-12 noon at 3901 W. Seventh Ave. Pkwy. (1 block east of Colorado Blvd.), Denver. Even though there are numerous organizations helping animals, in the end, each animal needs a home he or she can count on to uniquely nourish a broken or neglected spirit. It is the mission of Misha May Mutt Foundation to help you help these “special” dogs become whole once more.

Hang 20 at Loews Surf Dog Event this weekend in San Diego

Surf dog Ricochet, the SURFice dog who raises funds and awareness for charitable causes, is taking time off from her busy work schedule to have some fun! On Saturday, May 22nd, she’ll be joining her surf buddies from the Golden SurFURS, and So Cal Surf Dogs as they enjoy the festivities at the 5th Annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition. It will be a day of fun, surf and sand, and Ricochet, the Golden SurFURS, and So Cal Surf Dogs invite all dogs to hang 20 with them!

And your dog can try some surfing as well. There is a small dog, and large dog heat, and contestants are judged on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it”. The Loews Surf Dog competition is a fun activity for the whole family, and even if your dog doesn’t surf, you will have a great time watching these canines hang 20. This year, the event benefits the San Diego Police Department Canine Unit through the San Diego Police Foundation.

Surf Dog Ricochet is a member of both the Golden SurFURS, and the So Cal Surf Dogs. When she’s not working in her role of SURFice dog, she can often be seen surfing, or having fun with both groups. Ricochet will be surfing in the large dog category at Loews, as well as tandem with her littermate, Kalani, riding as the “Twisted Sisters”. The Golden SurFURS are part of the San Diego Golden Retriever Meet-up Group. They are a very popular, friendly, fun loving meet-up group that has over 830 members. They get together for free activities at least once a month, but often more frequently. They created the Golden SurFURS three years ago, and are always looking to add more Goldens to their SurFURS, as well as their fun group. The So Cal Surf Dogs is a fun loving group of southern California dog owners who focus on having fun with their dogs while promoting dog surfing.
