Dog Days of Summer Pet Food Drive

Monday, July 19, 2010

Dog Days of Summer Pet Food Drive starts tomorrow, July 19, 2010, and continues until the end of the month.

The event is being organized by Be the Change for Pets, a movement created by the passionate BlogPaws community. It represents the collective actions of members of the online pet community determined to make a difference in the lives of pets.

Please join the cause to raise food and supplies for shelters in need and spread the word about how helping pets can be fun.

Want to participate? Here’s how:

* Find a shelter or pet food bank near you and call to find out whether it accepts food donations from individuals.

* Buy a bag of pet food, then print out the BTC4Pets flier for your upcoming photo op.

* Drop off the food at your local shelter or food bank and have someone take a picture of you with the bag and the flier.

* Write a blog post, tweet (with #BTC4Pets) and/or post on Facebook about your awesome achievement to inspire your friends to do the same. (Of course you can always write two blog posts — one calling your friends to join you in the food drive and the other talking about your group’s trip to the shelter!)

* Post the picture of yourself donating the food to the Be the Change for Pets Facebook wall and add a link to your blog, Twitter account or Facebook post along with the pounds of food donated. We’ll add this amount to the total food/supplies donated so we can all see our impact!

* Want to take the campaign to the next level? Find out how to start a pet food bank on a shoestring budget.

Portland’s Pixie Project on the Today Show

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

The Today Show visited the Pixie Project, a nonprofit website based in Portland, Ore., that specializes in pairing rescue pets with loving families.

Amy Sacks & Karli Covington, the founders of The Pixie Project are committed to changing the image of a “rescue” or shelter animal. While some animals come to the Pixie Project seeking medical or behavioral attention not accessible in a typical shelter, many Pixie Project “kids” are professionally trained, family friendly pets whose circumstances have left them in need of a new home.

With a fully stocked non-profit pet supply store and a knowledgeable and supportive staff trained in the art of “pet matchmaking” adopting a pet through the Pixie Project feels more like a personalized dating service than your mom’s blind date set up.

The Pixie Project also serves a unique support function working tirelessly to connect pet owners with the resources they need to keep their pets with them. No situation is too big or too hard. “Nothing is impossible’” is their motto.

With over 1000 successful adoptions, an inexhaustible staff armed with expert animal knowledge, a whole lot of humor and an ever-changing cast of fantastic animals, The Pixie Project gives animal rescue a fresh and flirty facelife.

Help Kickstart Barkwheats Dog Biscuits

Monday, July 12, 2010

Barkwheats makes healthy, grain-free dog biscuits and are dedicated to both healthy dogs and small scale, organic farmers. Their nutritious biscuits are made of beneficial ingredients and partner with family farms to source those quality ingredients at fair wage prices. Barkwheats started just over two years ago and now, they’ve outgrown their home-based bakery and just moved in to a new place!

Unfortunately their current bakery equipment is just too small to meet the growing demand. Their small biscuit moulder is working on overdrive, and they need to upgrade. With this upgrade, they’ll be able to support more farmers and get more of their gluten-free treats to more dogs!

They need a total of $50,000 to upgrade the equipment and they’re trying to raise at least $25,000 Kickstarter.com. And this is where you can help and leave your mark. Barkwheats will only get funding if they reach the $25,000 goal by Sunday, Aug. 8 at 5 p.m. EDT. …. so there are only 27 days to go. You can pledge as little as $1 but if you pledge at least $10, you will receive various gifts and be part of helping a great company grow.

Extreme Mutt Makeover

Friday, July 9, 2010

The Mustang Heritage Foundation and the Humane Society of North Texas hope to give shelter dogs a second chance with a little loving care and training. Those chosen for the Extreme Mutt Makeover competition – and hundreds like them – will become valuable, wanted and adored companions.

One of the participating dog trainers is Joan Guertin of Common Sense Dog Training, outside of Gun Barrel City, TX. She is one of 15 trainers selected to compete in the third annual Extreme Mutt Makeover, a part of the Extreme Mustang Makeover in Fort Worth, TX, Aug. 13-14, 2010.

In a June 19 drawing, Guertin was matched up with the largest dog in the competition – a 65-pound, 13-month old Great Pyrenees mix male, from the Flower Mound animal shelter. His name is Pogo. (And Pogo already has a Fan Page on Facebook with more than 500 fans.)

Guertin and Pogo have just eight weeks to get to know and trust each other and train together before competing for cash and prizes at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. But there are no losers in this competition. Each dog will receive basic obedience training and a forever home.

A special team of canine professionals used recognized temperament assessment guidelines and scoring systems to select the dogs for the contest. Additionally, the health of each dog was evaluated using diagnostic veterinary testing. The competition will demonstrate basic obedience skills and any special talents or relationship the trainer has developed with the dog. All the dogs will be available for adoption.

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

You can help with the important mission of stamping out breed discrimination and make a fashion statement with this Pit Bull Necklace for Charity.

FAB Shows has collaborated with jewelry artist Christy Robinson to create a stunning necklace that both educates and raises money for this important cause.

This necklace, retailing for $30, is a bold statement piece for the passionate Pit Bull lover and advocate to wear proudly. Made of recycled aluminum, the Pit Bull silhouette hangs on an 18″ sterling silver chain. Measuring 1 1/2″ x 1″, this necklace allows you to display your solidarity for these misunderstood pooches. And with a conversation-starter like this, it provides continuous opportunities to educate others on the plight of this breed.

Christy Robinson donates 40 percent of the proceeds from this necklace to the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation. The Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation’s goal is to educate and raise awareness on important issues such as pet overpopulation, dog fighting, the senseless ideals behind breed specific banning, and the most recent crisis animals who have fallen victim of home foreclosures.

4th of July Saturday Pet Bloggers Hop!

Saturday, July 3, 2010

Happy 4th of July from Leaving Our Mark.

Here are some good dog safety tips for the 4th of July from the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. Stay safe and have fun!

* Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets. If ingested, the animal could become very intoxicated and weak, severely depressed or could go into a coma. Death from respiratory failure is also a possibility in severe cases.

* Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.

* Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach. Certain types of matches contain chlorates, which could potentially damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing—or even kidney disease in severe cases. Lighter fluid can be irritating to skin, and if ingested can produce gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If lighter fluid is inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop.

* Keep your pets on their normal diet. Any change, even for one meal, can give your pets severe indigestion and diarrhea. This is particularly true for older animals who have more delicate digestive systems and nutritional requirements. And keep in mind that foods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and yeast dough can all be potentially toxic to companion animals.

* Do not put glow jewelry on your pets, or allow them to play with it.While the luminescent substance contained in these products is not highly toxic, excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation could still result from ingestions, and intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic containers.

* Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products out of reach. Ingestions can produce stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. If inhaled, the oils could cause aspiration pneumonia in pets.

* Never use fireworks around pets! While exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns and/or trauma to the face and paws of curious pets, even unused fireworks can pose a danger. Many types contain potentially toxic substances, including potassium nitrate, arsenic and other heavy metals.

* Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities. Instead, keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home.

Update: Riviera Rescue

Friday, July 2, 2010

The Companion Animal Protection Society has joined the Santa Cruz SPCA and the Societé Défense des Animaux to mobilize a rescue program, Rescue Riviera / Sauvetage Riviera , that will take adoptable dogs out of certain death in over-crowded California shelters and airlift them to France, where they will be placed in adoptive homes.

And we are happy to report this update that they just completed their first airlift! Please share this wonderful story. It is in French but you all get the idea. Death row dogs in L.A. get a second chance in the South of France. Please help them do another airlift soon by donating to the Santa Cruz SPCA and CAPS.

And you can read more about Riviera Rescue on an earlier post that I did on their work.
