On our recent cruise vacation, we made a stop in Belize City. Among the many stores with jewelry, t-shirts and souvenirs was a table for the Belize Humane Society. I ended up making a small donation and buying one of their t-shirts as my vacation souvenir.

For over 10 years The Belize Humane Society has been sheltering abandoned animals, fighting cruelty and neglect, and working to build a caring, compassionate community. The Belize Humane Society and Animal Shelter (BHSAS) was founded in November of 1996 by a small group of concerned Belizeans and two Peace Corps Volunteers. They saw a need for an organization to protect the animals and provide a sheltering facility within the Belize City area.

BHSAS’s focus is to humanely stabilize the “free roaming” population of dogs and cats within Belize City. The Society works along with the Belize City Council and the Department of Public Health Central Region to address sanitation and health related issues.

BHSAS recognizes that spaying and neutering is the only humane solution to the stray population problem. BHSAS currently offers subsidized pet sterilization and educates the general public at dog shows, rabies clinics and other events to help achieve its goals.

You can help my making a monetary donation or sending them much needed supplies. Or you can get a t-shirt of your own at their online store to help spread the word about the Belize Humane Society.

Since 2003 First Coast No More Homeless Pets has facilitated more than 55,000 pet sterilizations in the First Coast area of Jacksonville, FL. There has been an overall reduction in pet intake of approximately 31%, and reductions in puppy and kitten intake of 44% and 52%. Prior to their programs, admissions and euthanasia were increasing by as much as 10% annually.

First Coast No More Homeless Pets was founded in 2001 when Rick DuCharme, founder and Executive Director, developed the SpayJax program in response to a request by the City of Jacksonville for a city funded spay/neuter program. Following SpayJax, SpayNassau was developed along with two other low-cost programs. In 2006, their Trap-Neuter-Return program was developed to offer low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for feral and stray cats.

FCNMHP opened a high volume, high quality spay/neuter clinic in April 2009, to facilitate the needed increase in surgeries. Much research has been undertaken to ensure the success of this facility including touring many high volume clinics in the Southeast and seeking a mentoring relationship with recognized experts in the field of high volume pet sterilizations. The spay/neuter clinic is modeled after the most effective clinics in the country that focus on high volume and high quality pet sterilizations. The clinic is designed with the capacity for up to 200 daily sterilizations, making it one of the highest volume clinics in the country when at full capacity.

The Foundation funds low cost spay/neuter clinics and voucher programs across the country to help animal lovers do their part in controlling animal overpopulation.
Helping Paw’s Mobile Clinic Offers Low-Cost Pet Spay/Neuter Services

Veterinarian Dr. Diane Levitan of Helping PAW (Promote Animal Welfare) operates a mobile veterinary clinic. Helping PAW’s mission is to bring low-cost spay and neuter services for dogs and cats to pet owners on New York’s Long Island who would otherwise not be able to afford to have their animals fixed.

The van, a 40-foot Toy Hauler RV, is fully loaded with state-of-the-art veterinary equipment, and the spay-neuter services offered exceed the care guidelines for such programs as laid out by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians. The Helping PAW mobile clinic will operate four days a week, making scheduled stops to offer its services at pet care centers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.

According to Dr. Levitan, the goal is to raise awareness of the need to spay/neuter to decrease the number of unwanted pets and to make spay/neuter accessible to more people who may find these services beyond their means in today’s tough economy.

The stray dog problem is a truly global issue – at this very moment there are millions of dogs on the streets and in slums, outside in all weather, with nothing to call home other than the bare dirty pavement. According to the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), there are 500 million dogs and only 25 percent have a home. They fight over the limited amounts of food and suffer from agonizing diseases such as rabies and distemper.

With a lack of knowledge and resources, communities in developing countries frequently resort to cruel methods of population control like poisoning, electrocution and shooting. These methods are inhumane, causing the animals great pain and suffering. They are also ineffective in the long term as they do not address the cause of the problem.

We have plenty of problems with overpopulation here in the US but when it comes to dogs, there are no boundaries. They all need are help. One group that is trying to help is Humane Society de Tijuana and Friends of Humane Society de Tijuana.

The Humane Society de Tijuana is a Mexican humane organization, organized by Mexicans to help solve the problems in Mexico. The HSTJ constantly strives toward goals that are consistent with Mexican law and as they relate to the standards of the International Humane Society. HSTJ is the result of four years of planning efforts on the part of active, hands-on people to bring about a comprehensive, efficient and fiscally responsible organization that can serve the public needs of Tijuana.

Friends of Humane Society de Tijuana directly supports the Humane Society de Tijuana, a San Diego based, not-for-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to improving the community through the humane treatment of animals.

Some of their services include: low cost or free spay and neuter clinics to control the overpopulation of unwanted animals; and Street Clinics in the poorest neighborhoods of Tijuana to treat animals for parasites, mange, infections, fleas and ticks.

Austin Pets Alive! is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to making Austin, Texas, a no-kill city. The organization’s purpose is to help people help pets in two ways: to provide the services needed to save the lives of the more than 10,000 pets killed each year at the City of Austin Town Lake Animal Center and to prevent them from getting there in the first place. The volunteers of APA! believe Austin’s kill rate of 50 percent is unacceptable and does not reflect the progressive spirit of its city’s residents.

Austin Pets Alive! was at the SXSW Film Festival on March 16, 2009, to help spread the word about their missions. Outside the convention center that morning, attendees were greeted by puppies and dogs looking to be adopted. The documentary, “MINE: Taken by Katrina”, debuted on March 16, 2009, at the Austin Convention Center. The filmmakers invited Austin Pets Alive! to be their guests to help us spread the word about their missions.

“MINE: Taken by Katrina” is the powerful story about the essential bond between humans and animals told against the backdrop of one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. (View Trailer)

“MINE: Taken by Katrina” explores how tragedy intensifies that bond and is told from the perspective of original guardians, rescuers, and adoptive parents of the voiceless victims of Katrina. These individuals are all connected by two things, the tragic aftermath of Katrina and their love of animals.

Each year, approximately 6-8 million homeless pets enter shelters that are stretched to the breaking point. Sadly, about half of those animals have their shelter stay end in euthanasia rather than adoption. On this last Tuesday in February, veterinarians and animal advocates have a chance to curb pet homelessness by helping spay and neuter thousands of dogs and cats.

Your vote will help raise additional funds to enable the charity we’re supporting to provide free or low-cost spay and neuter services for pets who need them.

Thank you for helping reduce pet overpopulation and for giving dogs and cats everywhere a fighting chance to enjoy a loving home.
