The seed for The Barking Lot was planted a few years back when the founder Stacy Palmer took in her first foster dog, Patti Cake, in hopes of making a bigger impact by helping her favorite furry friends. Before she knew it, she received an e-mail stating, “This dog to be put down on Tuesday at 3p.m.” She was utterly horrified and jumped into action figuring out how she could save her. After getting her adopted, Stacy thought, “That wasn’t so tough.” Over 900 dogs adopted into loving home and 3 years later, you have The Barking Lot.

The Barking Lot rescues dogs from area shelters, humane societies and Mexico as they are at risk of being euthanized and/or abandoned and they find them forever homes perfectly suited to their needs.

The Barking Lot is holding a BIG DOGS ROCK Adoption Event on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Fiesta Island in San Diego, CA. This HUGE adoption event features dogs over 50 lbs and they need volunteers. Please reply if you’re able to help!! stacy@thebarkinglot.net.

Dog Days of Summer Pet Food Drive starts tomorrow, July 19, 2010, and continues until the end of the month.

The event is being organized by Be the Change for Pets, a movement created by the passionate BlogPaws community. It represents the collective actions of members of the online pet community determined to make a difference in the lives of pets.

Please join the cause to raise food and supplies for shelters in need and spread the word about how helping pets can be fun.

Want to participate? Here’s how:

* Find a shelter or pet food bank near you and call to find out whether it accepts food donations from individuals.

* Buy a bag of pet food, then print out the BTC4Pets flier for your upcoming photo op.

* Drop off the food at your local shelter or food bank and have someone take a picture of you with the bag and the flier.

* Write a blog post, tweet (with #BTC4Pets) and/or post on Facebook about your awesome achievement to inspire your friends to do the same. (Of course you can always write two blog posts — one calling your friends to join you in the food drive and the other talking about your group’s trip to the shelter!)

* Post the picture of yourself donating the food to the Be the Change for Pets Facebook wall and add a link to your blog, Twitter account or Facebook post along with the pounds of food donated. We’ll add this amount to the total food/supplies donated so we can all see our impact!

* Want to take the campaign to the next level? Find out how to start a pet food bank on a shoestring budget.

Barkwheats makes healthy, grain-free dog biscuits and are dedicated to both healthy dogs and small scale, organic farmers. Their nutritious biscuits are made of beneficial ingredients and partner with family farms to source those quality ingredients at fair wage prices. Barkwheats started just over two years ago and now, they’ve outgrown their home-based bakery and just moved in to a new place!

Unfortunately their current bakery equipment is just too small to meet the growing demand. Their small biscuit moulder is working on overdrive, and they need to upgrade. With this upgrade, they’ll be able to support more farmers and get more of their gluten-free treats to more dogs!

They need a total of $50,000 to upgrade the equipment and they’re trying to raise at least $25,000 Kickstarter.com. And this is where you can help and leave your mark. Barkwheats will only get funding if they reach the $25,000 goal by Sunday, Aug. 8 at 5 p.m. EDT. …. so there are only 27 days to go. You can pledge as little as $1 but if you pledge at least $10, you will receive various gifts and be part of helping a great company grow.

The Humane Society of Boulder Valley formalized its food-share program in February 2009. Since then it has helped 92 pet owners.

The program’s food, which comes largely from donations, is handed out weekly at the Humane Society shelter based on individual need. Officials at the Humane Society do not keep records on which participants are homeless, nor do they have a policy directed at homeless people with pets.

The Humane Society provides the service to the community so animals can stay with their families and so they don’t have to relinquish their pets. The shelter has avoided promoting the program because of concerns that increased demand could not be met based on the current level of donations.

Animal Control officers for the city of Boulder often touch base with homeless people as part of their community outreach efforts and have been distributing food to homeless pet owners since before the food-share program was in place.

You can also support the The Humane Society of Boulder Valley by participating in the 21ST ANNUAL CAUSE FOR PAWS DOGGIE DASH on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010. All proceeds of this event directly benefit the homeless animals served by the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.

The National War Dog Monument will be an open-air memorial 5,000 square feet in size, constructed of granite and stone. The monument, located in Fort Belvoir, VA. within the 90 acre public set aside for the construction of the U.S. Army National Museum, will be surrounded by vegetation, bushes and trees, and it will include a small wall describing the role dogs have performed in our nation’s security. The centerpiece of the memorial is a 10-foot, D-shaped pedestal with five figures manufactured out of silicon bronze: a dog handler in modern-day combat gear surrounded by four dog breeds: Doberman, German shepherd, Labrador and the Belgian Malinois. The public site will accommodate public transportation, parking, and you can take your dog with you.

On Saturday, May 22nd, she’ll be joining her surf buddies from the Golden SurFURS, and So Cal Surf Dogs as they enjoy the festivities at the 5th Annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition. It will be a day of fun, surf and sand, and Ricochet, the Golden SurFURS, and So Cal Surf Dogs invite all dogs to hang 20 with them!

And your dog can try some surfing as well. There is a small dog, and large dog heat, and contestants are judged on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it”. The Loews Surf Dog competition is a fun activity for the whole family, and even if your dog doesn’t surf, you will have a great time watching these canines hang 20. This year, the event benefits the San Diego Police Department Canine Unit through the San Diego Police Foundation.

Surf Dog Ricochet is a member of both the Golden SurFURS, and the So Cal Surf Dogs. When she’s not working in her role of SURFice dog, she can often be seen surfing, or having fun with both groups. Ricochet will be surfing in the large dog category at Loews, as well as tandem with her littermate, Kalani, riding as the “Twisted Sisters”. For more info on Ricochet, go to http://www.SurfDogRicochet.com

The Golden SurFURS are part of the San Diego Golden Retriever Meet-up Group. They are a very popular, friendly, fun loving meet-up group that has over 830 members. They get together for free activities at least once a month, but often more frequently. They created the Golden SurFURS three years ago, and are always looking to add more Goldens to their SurFURS, as well as their fun group. For more info, visit their website http://goldens.meetup.com/33/

The So Cal Surf Dogs is a fun loving group of southern California dog owners who focus on having fun with their dogs while promoting dog surfing. They’ve got a good mix of breeds and sizes amongst their SurFURS, and they’re eager to meet your dog too! All dogs (and dog Owners) are welcome regardless of skill level or ability. They are enthusiastically encouraging anyone who dogs surfs, or wants to dog surf, to join their group. Their website is http://www.socalsurfdogs.com

San Antonio, TX., has a huge population of stray animals. Often, owners intentionally allow an unwanted pet or its litter to stray or “dump” them somewhere instead of accepting the responsibility of attempting to find them a good home where the pet will be loved and taken care of for life. These animals often become under socialized, ill, or injured and end up undergoing euthanasia. About 65% of all dogs picked up by the city are put down. That’s about 350 animals a week or 1,500 dead animals every month.

Ashlea M. Denton, a graduate of the University of Texas-San Antonio, has a plan to help all of these stray animals. She wants to build a dog kennel on her ranch in order to house more dogs. Especially dogs recovering from surgery, illness, or dogs that are combative toward other dogs. She has taken in strays at her ranch for the last 20 years and has also ran a free pet vaccination clinic for her rural low-income neighborhood. By building this kennel she could Save the lives of these dogs and give them a forever home.

You can help make this plan a reality by voting for her ideas on the Pepsi Refresh Project and you can follow her progress on Facebook.
