Oprah Winfrey has a new puppy, according to US Magazine.
She adopted an 8-week-old blonde-colored cocker spaniel on Sunday. The pup — one of a litter of six — was named Amanda by shelter staff, but the rep for PAWS Chicago shelter, Lisa Nowak, wasn’t sure if Winfrey renamed her.
Winfrey’s two cocker spaniels, Sophie and Solomon, died last year. Her golden retriever, Gracie, choked to death on a plastic ball in 2007. She still has two golden retrievers, Luke and Layla.
The host vowed to adopt her next pooch after dedicating a show to puppy mill horrors. She also donated money in Sophie’s name for a room at PAWS Chicago.
PAWS Chicago (Pets Are Worth Saving) is the Chicago’s largest No Kill humane organization, focused on alleviating Chicago’s tragic pet homelessness problem. Since PAWS Chicago’s founding, the number of homeless pets killed in the city has been reduced by more than half. PAWS Chicago envisions a No Kill Chicago and that dream is within reach because of important lifesaving work that is being done every single day.

I am so happy for Oprah. Losing a canine family member is so heartbreaking. Adding a new canine family member is the beginning of a wonderful new chapter in a person’s life (and the dog’s).
Oprah and the rest us who really love our dogs, should thank our lucky stars that we still have the option of adding a new canine family member to our household. Someday, if PETA, HSUS and PAWS Chicago have their bullying way, we won’t be able to have the privelege of sharing our lives with our much loved and cherished canine companions.
Thank you for your comment.
Do you have any suggestions for groups that we should featuring on Leaving Our Mark?
This is wonderful news and I hope it makes more people aware of the wonderful dogs that are at the animal shelters and need homes. The adoption option is all about saving a life.
Does PAWS have a web page or blog where they post about how they are able to save so many pets? NO-KILL info and advice?
The PAWS Chicago website is http://www.pawschicago.org/
