    The Dog-Friendly Cat Program

    Friday, February 5, 2010

A new campaign by the Dumb Friends League is asking people in dog-only homes to consider taking in a cat. Last year alone, the Dumb Friends League took in more than 10,000 abandoned, lost or stray cats.

The Dumb Friends League is partnering with VCA Animal Hospitals and the CATalyst Council on a campaign to get the word out about the new program. Letters being sent dog-only homes in the VCA database are written from the dog’s perspective. It’s a request from the family dog to be like other dogs in 40 percent of American homes that have cats in their families as well.

Through the Dog-Friendly Cat Program, families can bring their dogs in to meet with potential feline friends. Cats adopted are also spayed or neutered, microchipped and given their first round of vaccinations for no additional charge.

To find out more about the Dog-Friendly Cat Program, go to www.ddfl.org/dogfriendlycats.

If you would like more information about the process of introducing a cat into your dog-friendly home, check out this story in the Spring 2010 Issue of The American Dog Magazine, “Can You Bring a Cat Home …”

    UNCHAIN PA DOGS

    Monday, January 25, 2010

UNCHAIN PA DOGS is dedicated to promoting legislation in Pennsylvania to end the widely tolerated practice of chaining dogs for life, or for extended periods of time.

HB1254 was introduced on April 13, 2009 by Rep. Mario Scavello (R) of Monroe County, PA. It is the third anti-tethering bill to be introduced in Pennsylvania.

HB1254 would limit the number of hours a dog can be tethered outside within a 24 hour period. Dogs would not be permitted to be tethered outside unattended between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. In addition, the following protections would be in place during the hours a dog is permitted to be tethered:
    * Tether must not become entangled
    * Minimum tether length requirement
    * Tow chains are not permitted
    * Proper fitting collar or harness
    * Protection from direct rays of the sun (requirement for shade)
    * Tethering is not permitted when a weather advisory has been issued

As of January 22, 2010, this bill is still awaiting action in the Judiciary Committee. Learn how you can help dogs in Pennsylvania as well as how you can help dogs in your state.

Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH)

    Tuesday, January 19, 2010

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) will be working on the ground to help the animals in Haiti. We have come together to form the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) so that all animal welfare organizations involved in response efforts can work together and make sure we get aid to as many animals, and in as short a time, as possible.

You can follow some of their work on the WSPA Animals in Disasters Blog.

ARCH was created to address the needs of animals in Haiti in this time of crisis. The coalition is headed by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), and in addition to the ASPCA, consists of a number of animal welfare groups including American Humane, Best Friends, the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International.

There are an estimated 5 million head of livestock in the country (mostly goats), a large stray dog population, and an untold number of companion animals and native wildlife all adversely affected by the earthquake.Currently, a team of experts in animal emergency response is staging in the Dominican Republic waiting to get into Haiti to begin work. IFAW and WSPA have also begun to stock a mobile clinic with vaccines, antibiotics, bandages, food and other supplies in anticipation of bringing direct aid to animals.

If you would like to contribute to these efforts, please donate here.

    National Disaster Search Dog Foundation

    Friday, January 15, 2010

Dogs from around the world are being sent to help in the search and recovery effort in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. The U.S. government is sending two, 72-man search and rescue teams with dogs to help dig out survivors. Elsewhere, dogs were departing from Peru, Taiwan, Mexico and Britain, where a 64-member team, including dogs and handlers was en route.

The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation has sent at least six dog-and-handler teams have been sent to Haiti.

The teams were deployed as part of Los Angeles County’s California Task Force 2 (CA-TF2) to find victims of the earthquake buried under rubble. Each Task Force brings over 50,000 pounds of equipment, including vehicles, heavy machinery and supplies in addition to their most valuable tool: live-scent Search Dogs. The dogs are able to climb and run across rubble, like the piles of concrete in the streets of Port-Au-Prince, and determine within minutes if there are survivors buried below.

You can learn more about the teams at http://www.searchdogfoundation.org. Follow them on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

    BUY ONE, GET ONE KILLED!

    Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Here is a powerful and direct PSA from Peta.org.

When you buy an animal from a pet store or a breeder, you’re responsible for a new member of the family! You’re also responsible for the death of an animal in an animal shelter who needed a home. If you want to bring an animal into your life, always adopt from an animal shelter.

Dogs Trust’s Campaign Against Puppy Mills in the UK

    Monday, January 11, 2010

Dogs Trust campaign against the battery farming of dogs highlights the fact that the UK dog-owning public is uneducated about the truth about puppy mills and are inadvertently buying dogs from puppy farms and fueling the cruel trade.

In a recent survey, Dogs Trust asked dog owners if they would consider buying a dog from a puppy farm. Although almost 95% said no, when asked where they had got their dog from 15.1% – potentially 900,000 dog owners – admitted they had got them from an advertisement in the newspaper, the internet, a pet shop or a pet superstore, all outlets often supplied by puppy farms.

Dogs Trust introduced the term “battery farming of dogs” to associate the practice with the battery farming of chickens. They want dog lovers to be informed about how to find a “cruelty-free dog.” If you are interested in buying a dog and are worried about how to tell the difference between a reputable breeder and a puppy farm, please read their Buying a Dog section.

Learn more about the Dogs Trust Against Battery Farming of Dogs and how you can support the campaign.
